Polyn Walkthrough
Polyn is an adorable puzzle word game with cute graphics and challenging puzzles that will keep you entertained from the very beginning until the very end. In this game, your goal is to pollinate as many of the flowers with letters on them as possible by using them to make words of three letters or more. This premise isn't really that unique in the world of puzzle word games, with the exception of the pollination angle, but this game is far too cute to be boring. By adding combos, chains and higher point values for certain letters, this game has offered what experienced players need to really feel challenged without alienating beginners with a difficulty level that's too intimidating. You are able to three different levels of difficulty - easy, medium and hard - so you'll be able to find a mode of play that suits your skill and experience level. It isn't a terribly complicated game but it isn't so simple it isn't stimulating. This is a game any word game fan needs to play at least once.
The game screen in Polyn is going to take a little getting used to for puzzle word game players who are used to seeing the same basic set up in each game. The information is actually pretty basic and is what you would expect to find in a game of this nature, but how it's laid out is a bit different. Most of the information you need is displayed at the top of the game screen. At the top left you have your current level and your current score. The bar in the center of the top of the screen (with the honey flowing inside) shows you how much time you have left in a level. To the right of the bar, you have the option to 'replant' all of the flowers in a level allowing you to start fresh and finally at the very top right you have the option to turn the sound on or off. Personally, Polyn is one of the few games I like playing with the sound on, but it isn't for everyone. If you find it annoying, just turn it off.
Below your basic information but still at the top of the game screen, you have your word panel. This is pretty much the same in Polyn as it is in most other puzzle word games online. You have the option to clear what you've selected on the left, the letters you've selected in the center and adorable Polyn on the right to submit the word. An option many other word games don't offer is shown at the bottom left side of the word panel; the small flower that indicates how many flowers you have stored up to make a combo. If you're a high score fanatic, keep an eye on that flower. Combos are a great way to earn good scores in this game.
As is true with many of the better puzzle word games online, Polyn issues each letter in the alphabet a different point value. Vowels and commonly used consonants ('l', 'n', 'r', 's', 't') are all worth one point each when used in a word while letter that are harder to fit into words are given a higher value. For example, 'q' and 'z' are both difficult to use in a word and are therefore worth ten points each, 'x' and 'j' are worth eight points each and 'k' is worth five points. Each letter you use will contribute to the score you get for the word. For example, the word 'quiz' is worth twenty-two points - ten points for 'q', ten points for 'z' and one point each for each vowel.
Combos are a feature Polyn offers that you won't find with most other puzzle word games; at least not as you find them here. You create combos by using three or more consecutive colors. The great thing about this feature is that you are able to use flowers from previous words to make your combos. Combos are a great way to build you score so it's important to try to make them as often as possible. If you're considering a certain word, look to see if there's another way to make that word using flowers of one color; especially if you have some of that color stored. You can get an excellent score if you can master the combo. It takes a little practice and a little extra thinking, the the score bonus is worth it. Earn even more points by creating chains. Chains are created when you are able to make more than one consecutive combo. As you progress in the game making combos and chains gets much harder so try to make as many as you can in beginning levels. It's important to remember, a chain does not need to be made up of all one color. As long as you make consecutive combos, the combo will count toward the chain. The chain will only be broken when you fail to make a combo.
The best way to get a good score in Polyn is to make combos and chains using the most valuable letters you're given throughout the first few levels of the game and then focus on simply making words. The later levels in the game are going to offer a challenge for even the most experienced puzzle word game players, so don't worry too much about things like combos and letter value if you're having a hard time even finding valid words. Newcomers to the genre are going to have a hard time with this game right from the start, even on the easiest setting, but stick with it. As you play, you'll get a better idea as to how the game is played. You really have to have a decent vocabulary to do well in this one, but you don't really have to be outstanding in the word power department. With a little bit of experience, you'll start to learn the power of the three letter word and how many extra points you can add to a word just by adding an 's'. For example, if you use the word 'cat' look for an 's' you can add to make 'cats'. You'll get a better score. If you're spelling the word 'fat', see if you have an 'x'. If you do, replace the 't' with the 'x' to make 'fax'. Instead of a six point word, you'll have a thirteen point word.
Overall, Polyn is an engrossing and addictive puzzle word game that will keep you playing game after game. It is challenging, but not so difficult beginners won't be able to enjoy it, even if they aren't able to make it passed the first level. Experienced players will like the addition of combos, chains and the different point values for letters as it makes the game more challenging and makes it easier for someone who has experience to get a high score. You have to be quick and you have to pay attention to the color and value of the letters you use if you want to get your name on the leader board, but that isn't an unrealistic goal. If you're a fan of word games, Polyn is definitely one you need to check out!
